Danai Fuengshunut (1974) obtained his bachelor in design from the Willem de Kooning Academie (WdKA) in Rotterdam the Netherlands in 2000. During his major Illustration he had an exchange period at the Art Institute of Boston (U.S.A). After graduation he started as as a freelance Illustrator for more than 10 years. Clients were primarily Dutch editorial publishers such as: Metro-niews, Adformatie, Management Team, Federatie Nederlandse Vakbeweging (FNV), Vereniging Eigen Huis (VEH), Bouw-IQ, Computable, Schoolbestuur, Medisch Contact and PC-magazine.
In 2002 he obtained his first degree teacher status at the Hogeschool Rotterdam (HR). During this course he had an exchange at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EESTI). He did internships at: Sint Laurens College, Rotterdam, Wolvert van Borselen, Rotterdam, and Grafisch Lyceam Rotterdam. From 2002 till 2005 he worked part time as a teacher and coordinator of the cultural program at Roncalli Mavo Rotterdam. He designed the current school logo of Roncalli Mavo.
From 2004 till 2008 he lived in Antwerp with his friend Toon Vugts. Togerther the initiated their project of the Unknown Museum. During this period they made commercial works, personal projects and gave expositions. From 2005 till 2007 Danai participated in a part-time paintingcourse at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (KASK) in Antwerp.
In 2008 Danai started creating ‘personal movie posters’ (visual movie reviews). His illustrations were used by the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR 2009-2014), the Leids International Film Festival (LIFF 2010-2013), and were displayed at the Filmhuis in Leiden and Filmhuis Den Hague. Since 2010 his posters have been on permanent display at Cinerama Rotterdam.
In 2003 he started teaching at the WdKA. He started with painting courses and assisting graduation year Illustration students. From 2007 till 2012 he developed a minor program painting. From 2006 he became course director of the department of Illustration. From 2011 till 2013 he was part of the ‘development team’ that developed a new project based curriculum for design education at the WdKA.
In 2014 he obtained his Masters in Education (Learning and Innovation) at the HR. His main interests in education are; project-based education, collaborative learning, self-regulation and Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). In 2014 he was jury member of the Lemniscaat International Illustration Competition. In 2015 he became member of the ‘Rotterdam Counsil for Arts & Culture’ (RRKC).
Danai lives with his girlfriend and two children in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
